OUTPOST recap…

To all the organisers of OUTPOST @ Cockatoo Island – WELL DONE!!! We should have more of this events here in Sydney (rather Australia). Here are some of our highlights of the day. Outpost is still on until December 11. Don’t miss it!!!
Special mention to Eddie Zammit of T-World and aMBUSH gallery for the outstanding NEXT exhibition.
Outpost Project | Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour | 4-Nov to 11-Dec

The crown jewel of Sydney harbour, Cockatoo Island, a former military outcrop and penal colony will be transformed this November. In conjunction with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, witness the island wide invasion as aMBUSH Gallery launches a curatorial take-over – transforming the industrial monument into a battlefield of street-art. The Outpost Project will be the Southern-hemisphere’s largest Street Art Festival to date, with a projected 90, 000 visitors over the course of 5 weeks. Amongst a myriad of forums, educational programs, aMBUSH will bring to the table the nexus of content featured on the island.
Kid wonder and Australia’s very own rising star, Kid Zoom, who has been described as “Rembrandt with a spray can” will be dominating the Turbine Shed with his project Kid Zoom: Home.
Our very own subversive Australian delegate for the International street art and graffiti movement, Anthony Lister, will pepper the island with his signature garish faces grinning larger than life transposed on enormous balloons.
Letterform king, DMOTE, arguably Australia’s prime delegate of the traditional graffiti school, will be gracing our shores across multiple projects but primarily in his own panel installation demonstrating the new leaps and techniques which compliment his ever evolving style.
Nestled in a cocoon of cotton, draped adjacently to the Turbine shed lies NEXT. Curated by Eddie Zammit, founder of T-world (the only T-shirt journal on the planet), NEXT sets the benchmark for T-shirt graphics globally. The exhibit celebrates the street art category using the T-shirt as its most accessible canvas. As part of the exhibition, over 1,000+ T-shirts will be displayed from over 200 international and local labels. The space is accompanied by an exclusive portrait photography exhibition by Nicole Reed, featuring some of the most influential designers, artists and label founders from the T-shirt world, with content spanning 7 continents she will be presenting the culmination of her photojournalistic documentation. The project offers 20 artists and labels determining the future direction of T-shirt graphics from the likes of leading creatives 123KLAN, jeffstaple and Alex Trochut.
Beyond it’s previous two inceptions, Pastemodernism 3, curated by Sydney heavyweight Ben Frost will be the largest yet. Pastemodernism 3 will see every inch of surface area covered in wheatpastes posters from a slew of hand-picked artists. In what is the most populated exhibition of OUTPOST, Pastemodernism 3 will include over 250 artists, both local and International.
Joining us from Melbourne, is powerhouse creative collective Everfresh Studio. The crew whose stellar lineup includes Phibs, Meggs, Rone, Reka, Sync, Prizm, Wonderlust, Stabs and Makatron will be tackling the East Apron Cliff Face with a tongue-in-cheek statement of the anti-graffiti rhetoric of yesteryear, over the course of the festival’s first three days. It will be left towering over the island, welcoming patrons as they arrive on the ferry.
A sight for sore eyes, Project Ugly will sit gazing over the harbour displaying 20 pannels from interstate street artists, including an onsite live painting on an industrial scale by Sydney figure Sprinkles and as well, Brisbane based Shida will unleash his feline extra-dimensional creatures. Shida will be painting on the Saturday 5th, and Sprinkles the Sunday 6th November between 10am and 5pm. Amongst the pre-created collection will be Above (San Francisco), Creepy and Daek (Last Chance Studios, Perth) and Drypnz (NZ).
The Mays Lane collection, evolved from a way to promote graffiti in a legal context from cultural bastion St Peters, into the distilled efforts of the finest National and visiting International artists.
Serving as the festivals inundation, the rite-of-passage, Artery, located in the Dog Leg Tunnel will greet patrons upon first landing – being a sample of the creative tone to come. This will be Australia’s most premiere group show to date, featuring a who’s who of major players in the Australian art scenescape including Meggs, Haha, Rone, Yok and Drewfunk amongst other featured Outpost Artists.
A metaphorical passing of the torch, Foundations will see Sydney’s original oldskool graffiti delegates who shaped the local scene and context today, alongside newschool up-and-coming crew the Insomniaks. From the old stable will be Kode2, Rexy, Kerupt, Mistery, Mare, Unique, Spice, Gane2 Phibs, Kade and Paze. Representing the new wave from the Insomniaks will be Jota, Daks, Joshuair, Opens, Oricks, Roter, Loks, Hules, Ouch, Ugly Greg, Yzer and Owel.
The highly successful Secret Wars, will be progressively intensifying over the course of the festival, with two artists battling head-to-head in a 90 minute freestyle creation each heat. Throughout the duration of the festivals run the battle royale will be staggered with heats being:
12 NOVEMBER, 6:00 – 7:30PM – Houl v Scale
19 NOVEMBER, 2:00 – 3:30PM – Mike Watt v Shannon Crees
26 NOVEMBER, 6:00 – 7:30PM – Deb v Teem
3 DECEMBER, 2:00 – 3:30PM – Ben Bigeni v Ken Taylor
Melbourne folk artist hero Ghostpatrol will translate his dreamy, fantasy universe into a bi-locational installation with Tristan Jallelah. The projects will replicate his stylistic world of wonder akin to a boy and the universe. Featuring kilometers of coloured wool, the project will be an exploration of the Moon Titan of Saturn and humanity’s place in relation.
In her signature, delicate, dark yet feminine style, Vexta will be tackling a sheer mass of corrugated iron on the Island with her fluid use of stencils and intricate hand painted detailing. Her work will be a personal extrapolation onto the medium complete with neon-drenched figures suspended in time and space.
Born from complementing styles, Phibs, Beastman and Numskull, three Sydney based heavyweights in the Street Art scene, are collaborating to fabricate an installation called Temple. The trio are creating a teepee in their whimsical dreamlike character and tribal leanings.
Also included will be the Oi You! Collection featuring the largest private collection of Banksy’s, amongst works by David Choe and Herakut. As well, live painting by Sao Paulo artist Ethos and Belgian monotone muralist Roa. Throughout the duration of the festival will be the Pro-AM tour Grand Final run by Skateboarding Australia. Inclusive will be an array of forums, family friendly activities and educational workshops and much more throughout the festivals tenure. Pick up a guide to see all the details.
The festival itself will run from the 4th of Nov to the 11th of Dec 2011, in a joint collaborative effort with aMBUSH Gallery and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust. Acclaim Magazine Issue 24: FANTASY

The wait is over. The new issue of Australian creative lifestyle title ACCLAIM magazine is set to hit local shelves the first week of August, 2011.
The theme of issue 24 is FANTASY. Perhaps it was the cabin fever we’ve all been feeling from being stuck inside this Melbourne winter or perhaps we’re just a bunch of trippers at heart, either way we are excited to unleash the fantasy theme onto our readers. We felt it was time to take a step away from the tangible world and take a trip into our subconscious, with our editorial team digging into every mystical nook and magical cranny to create a psychedelic journey with each page.
As always, the issue has two very special covers. The short-run cover features the work of futuristic Swedish artist and illustrator, Kilian Eng. Kilian is featured in the issue also, along with his work which references the future and analogue culture at once. His retro-future girl graces our cover and on a very select number of issues, the cover features glow-in-the-dark ink. These will be available exclusively to Australian Magnation stores and subscribers (Please note this cover version will be out a week later than the standard cover, due to the special printing process). The standard version of Kilian’s cover is available from all of the boutiques within ACCLAIM’s BTQ network.
The general release cover which will hit newsagents across the country, features the polarizing figure that is Bay Area rapper, Lil B. Who better to champion the fantasy issue than the tripped out Based God. The issue features an exclusive interview and photoshoot with Lil B. Love him or hate him, B is prolific and very much an example of the new generation of music artists in today’s economy. An intriguing mix of strategic social-media savvy and his stream of consciousness rhyme-style and quotables, the rapper has the internet world entranced.
Other content includes:
Mark Bode
We chat with artist Mark Bode, who is carrying on the family business passed on by his father, the iconic comic book artist Vaughn Bode. Vaughn’s artistic vision including his characters such as the Cheech Wizard, have infiltrated street art and graffiti culture for years and are kept alive via his son’s work which continues on with the comic book legacy.
Mark McCloud
San Fran’s Mark McCloud has the impressive title of owning the world’s largest collection of acid blotter art, which he houses on his premises aptly titled The Institute of Illegal Images. Mark let’s us in on his various court cases with the DEA, the psychedelic experience and the history of the acid tab.
Dagorhir
NYC photographer Walker Esner sets his lense on one of the most intriguing of outsider activities, that of larping (live action role playing) with his Dagorhir photo editorial. We also speak with one of the key organisers of the events.
Mansions on the Moon
Virginian electronic trio Mansions on the Moon finally have lift-off with their debut album about to drop, co-signs from The Neptunes and a stint at Red Bull Music Academy. We speak to the promising new act about their recent move to LA, the recording process and being mistaken for Seth Rogan.
Ivan Benic
Ivan Benic is world-renowned for his mystical artwork which appeared on the sides of automobiles during the vanning movement of the ‘70s. Our feature with the artist includes archival photos of some of his iconic pieces that have never been published anywhere ‘til today.
Nagi Noda
The late Japanese artist and director Nagi Noda had a uniquely imaginative way of looking at the world, which was evident in her dreamlike videos and artworks. We speak with a number of friends and collaborators of the artist, including Mark Ryden and Kenneth Cappello, on their memories of Nagi.
Mel Ramos
Mel Ramos paints every man’s fantasy: fast food and naked women. Using the mantra of sex sells, Ramos is one of the last original pop-artists, still eagerly at work even in his 70s. We interview the iconic artist of his work, family and painting Pamela Anderson.
ACCLAIM magazine is available through all good newsagents, select boutiques and Magnation stores. A digital version of ACCLAIM is now available to purchase via Zinio. Hard-copy subscriptions can be made through the Magnation website. If you are interested in stocking ACCLAIM in your store, please contact vincent@acclaimmag.com

Ambush Gallery Presents: Love is Here – 35 Aussie Artists & Live Acoustic Set by Sietta

The often spoken phrase on the lips of all; from lovers, family members, friends and strangers, I love you takes on a new dimension – moving from the verbal expression to the visual manifestation.
