ABSOLUT & aMBUSH collaboration with Artists for Cause

ABSOLUT Vodka and aMBUSH Gallery join forces to collaborate with four Australian street art legends; Ben Frost, James Jirat-Patradoon, Shannon Crees and Vexta, which will see their unique ‘bottle art’ expressions exhibited at Sydney’s Opera Bar until Wed-29-Feb before being auctioned on-line with proceeds going to four separate charities.

The ‘ABSOLUT aMBUSH’ Street Art Charity Collaboration came about as an extension of ABSOLUT Vodka’s support of the Australia’s first Street Art Festival, the highly successful OUTPOST Project.

Each of the four artists has been commissioned to create a one-off piece using an oversize ABSOLUT MODE Limited Edition display bottle as the canvas (each bottle measuring 500mm in height). The result is four original art works featuring spray, stencilling and illustration techniques, each bearing the distinctive signature of these dynamic young artists.

The ‘ABSOLUT aMBUSH’ exhibition is open at the Opera Bar in Sydney until 29-Feb, the online auction is now live via eBay. Bidding closes on Sat-25-Feb. All proceeds will be donated to the select charity of each artist – RSPCA (Ben Frost), Mission Australia (James Jirat-Patradoon), Sea Shepherd (Shannon Crees) and Borneo Orangutan Survival Australia (Vexta).

Welcome To The Brightside Extravaganza by aMBUSH Gallery

Launching on Valentine’s Day, the exhibition is an insight to the world of artist BrightSide (Katie Bright) and will showcase works that are screen printed onto mirrors, lighting installations and live performance.

BrightSide uses her passion for fancy dress to reflect her feelings and current personal issues. Her images are loosely based around connections to both pre-existing animation characters and those from her vivid imagination. BrightSide’s characters act as reflections and observations of desires, drawn together by the desire to shift, change or indulge.

The concept is derived from how fairytales in particular, have skewed the vision of romance. The work acts as part of a self-reprogramming experiment by selecting several fable characters to identify with. Each character represents good and naughty, and acts as a pathway for self-discovery, perhaps, without the necessity for that ‘knight in shining armour to unexpectedly show up to the rescue.

The opening night will include pole dancing by Bobbi’s Pole Dancing Studio, contortions by Bendy Em, roaming cupids by Dwarf Your Party and live music by Erskine Brown, Mr Bamboo and The Cope Street Parade.

Complimentary ice cold XXXX Summer Bright Beer and Green Fairy Absinth cocktails will be served by our ‘muscled up’ topless waiters.

The exhibition will also run alongside an online catalogue with works for sale from 15 to 26 February, allowing interstate buyers to remotely buy works. Information regarding this will be available on the aMBUSH website.

WHAT: WELCOME TO THE BRIGHTSIDE EXTRAVAGANZA

About the Southern Drop Bear:

The Southern Drop Bear (Ursu Occasus), one of Australia’s most unique marsupial species sits on the brink of extinction due to the rapid depletion of their native habitat.  A mysterious creature, the Drop Bear is now so rare in number that many wrongly perceive the species to be one of myth and legend, allowing for public attention to be diverted to more widely recognized species currently under threat.

Similar to Koalas in size and appearance, the nocturnal Drop Bear is a distant relative of the Koala species, however unlike it’s docile cousin, the Drop Bear evolved as a carnivorous creature, equipped with sharp claws and teeth and exists upon a primary diet of small birds and lizards.

Rapid deforestation in the early eighties lead to a spate of Drop Bear attacks on humans who unwittingly stumbled into the territory of a creature now close to starvation and desperate for food alternatives. The terrifying nature of a Drop Bear attack, in which the creatures plunge from the forest canopy onto the heads of their victims lead to widespread paranoia and despite no recorded deaths from Drop Bear attacks in over a hundred years, the Victorian government sanctioned a cull of the species in 1984.

Thankfully, the killing of Drop Bears was officially outlawed nationally in 1996 and the species was officially added to the Endangered list but by this time the damage was done and the Southern Drop Bear population was decimated. In 2009 a Monash University study of the species estimated their numbers to be less than 1000 across small areas of forest in Victoria and New South Wales. Sightings of the animal are extremely rare, leading to speculation that total extinction is likely within the next five years.

New Era – Limited Edition Collaboration Snap-backs (New Era X China Heights)

New Era Australia has initiated two collaborative releases just in time for Christmas with each design limited to 200 units.

The first of the two collaborative releases sees New Era working with Sydney born, Tokyobased graphic artist Mark Drew. A video interview with Mark Drew has been released in conjunction with the Limited Edition caps.

Each of the local collaborating teams – Mark Drew and Melbourne’s Saint Side – were given free reign to develop their design for iconic baseball cap brand New Era.  Both teams elected to work with the classic 950 snap-back silhouette.

Mark’s design features the slogan ‘No Money, No Wife’ which humourously flips a popular marketing slogan for Japan’s Tower Records; ‘No Music, No Life’.

The Limited Edition Mark Drew New Era is available in Black and Gold (primary release) and Black/White/Grey (available at Launch Event only) for RRP $60 exclusively from  Sydney’s Half Sleeve.

Information for the Saint Side release and the accompanying video interview will be released late November.

Mark Drew New Era Launch Event and Photographic Exhibition: 6PM Friday December 9, 2011 | China Heights Gallery Surry Hills, NSW.

About Mark Drew:

Mark Drew is a renowned graphic artist with a credible history in independent zine publishing and other endeavours within Sydney’s underground culture.

Mark is best known for his role as co-founder and long-time curator of Sydney’s China Heights Gallery, a position that he held until his relocation to Tokyo two years ago. Mark’s work continues to garner international recognition and is in constant demand as an exhibiting artist and commercial designer.  Visit Mark Drew’s website here.

aMBUSH Gallery presents SURFACE TENSION

Australia’s new wave of street art is already here. Following on from their curatorial hit Outpost Project at Cockatoo Island, aMBUSH proudly presents Surface Tension, featuring artists E.L.K. (Luke Cornish, VIC), Heesco (VIC), Shida (QLD), Slurpree Slug (NSW), Sofles (VIC) and Sprinkles (NSW). The artists will paint and transform the gallery walls, integrating the space itself into their body of works. Hailing from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, the stellar emergent line-up represents the next epoch, the next movement. Come and see where it all starts.

The opening will take place on Friday 25 November from 6-9pm at aMBUSH Gallery, 4A James Street Waterloo. Join us for complimentary drinks provided by Absolut and future leaning beats and Hip-hop between provided by Zwelli.

On the billing will be Brisbane born, cut-back king, Sofles, recently returned from the San Francisco all-Australian show ‘Young and Free’ – himself one of the country’s finest graffiti exports. Also from Brisbane, Shida’s vicious extra dimensional figures will grin across the concrete backdrop. Moving further down south, representing Sydney will be Sprinkles, co-founder of Half-Star clothing, with his hyper-cartoon skulls stalking the back of your thoughts. Marking his exclusive gallery appearance is the mysterious street thrasher, Slurpee Slug, with his raw psychedelia a cross between whizz fizz characters and acid. From the Melbourne camp, and representing Blender studios we have Heesco and E.L.K. Heesco, the current Sydney Secret Wars champion, has a talent in creating anguished faces and loose figures caught in motion. E.L.K. (Luke Cornish) is widely regarded as a National stencil treasure, able to bring photorealistic portrayals in muted tones through painstaking execution of layering, deconstructing and reconstructing his works with his own flair. E.L.K. was the winner of the 2010 Australian Stencil Art Prize, and made the cover of Monthly Art Magazine, April 2011.

The exhibition will also run alongside an online catalogue with works for sale from Saturday 26 November and runs until 4 December, allowing interstate buyers to remotely buy works. Information regarding this will be available on the aMBUSH website from the opening night.

OUTPOST recap…

To all the organisers of OUTPOST @ Cockatoo Island – WELL DONE!!!  We should have more of this events here in Sydney (rather Australia).  Here are some of our highlights of the day.  Outpost is still on until December 11.  Don’t miss it!!!

Special mention to Eddie Zammit of T-World and aMBUSH gallery for the outstanding NEXT exhibition.

Outpost Project | Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour | 4-Nov to 11-Dec

The crown jewel of Sydney harbour, Cockatoo Island, a former military outcrop and penal colony will be transformed this November. In conjunction with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, witness the island wide invasion as aMBUSH Gallery launches a curatorial take-over – transforming the industrial monument into a battlefield of street-art. The Outpost Project will be the Southern-hemisphere’s largest Street Art Festival to date, with a projected 90, 000 visitors over the course of 5 weeks. Amongst a myriad of forums, educational programs, aMBUSH will bring to the table the nexus of content featured on the island.

Kid wonder and Australia’s very own rising star, Kid Zoom, who has been described as “Rembrandt with a spray can” will be dominating the Turbine Shed with his project Kid Zoom: Home.

Our very own subversive Australian delegate for the International street art and graffiti movement, Anthony Lister, will pepper the island with his signature garish faces grinning larger than life transposed on enormous balloons.

Letterform king, DMOTE, arguably Australia’s prime delegate of the traditional graffiti school, will be gracing our shores across multiple projects but primarily in his own panel installation demonstrating the new leaps and techniques which compliment his ever evolving style.

Nestled in a cocoon of cotton, draped adjacently to the Turbine shed lies NEXT. Curated by Eddie Zammit, founder of T-world (the only T-shirt journal on the planet), NEXT sets the benchmark for T-shirt graphics globally. The exhibit celebrates the street art category using the T-shirt as its most accessible canvas. As part of the exhibition, over 1,000+ T-shirts will be displayed from over 200 international and local labels. The space is accompanied by an exclusive portrait photography exhibition by Nicole Reed, featuring some of the most influential designers, artists and label founders from the T-shirt world, with content spanning 7 continents she will be presenting the culmination of her photojournalistic documentation. The project offers 20 artists and labels determining the future direction of T-shirt graphics from the likes of leading creatives 123KLAN, jeffstaple and Alex Trochut.

Beyond it’s previous two inceptions, Pastemodernism 3, curated by Sydney heavyweight Ben Frost will be the largest yet. Pastemodernism 3 will see every inch of surface area covered in wheatpastes posters from a slew of hand-picked artists. In what is the most populated exhibition of OUTPOST, Pastemodernism 3 will include over 250 artists, both local and International.

Joining us from Melbourne, is powerhouse creative collective Everfresh Studio. The crew whose stellar lineup includes Phibs, Meggs, Rone, Reka, Sync, Prizm, Wonderlust, Stabs and Makatron will be tackling the East Apron Cliff Face with a tongue-in-cheek statement of the anti-graffiti rhetoric of yesteryear, over the course of the festival’s first three days. It will be left towering over the island, welcoming patrons as they arrive on the ferry.

A sight for sore eyes, Project Ugly will sit gazing over the harbour displaying 20 pannels from interstate street artists, including an onsite live painting on an industrial scale by Sydney figure Sprinkles and as well, Brisbane based Shida will unleash his feline extra-dimensional creatures. Shida will be painting on the Saturday 5th, and Sprinkles the Sunday 6th November between 10am and 5pm. Amongst the pre-created collection will be Above (San Francisco), Creepy and Daek (Last Chance Studios, Perth) and Drypnz (NZ).

The Mays Lane collection, evolved from a way to promote graffiti in a legal context from cultural bastion St Peters, into the distilled efforts of the finest National and visiting International artists.

Serving as the festivals inundation, the rite-of-passage, Artery, located in the Dog Leg Tunnel will greet patrons upon first landing – being a sample of the creative tone to come. This will be Australia’s most premiere group show to date, featuring a who’s who of major players in the Australian art scenescape including Meggs, Haha, Rone, Yok and Drewfunk amongst other featured Outpost Artists.

A metaphorical passing of the torch, Foundations will see Sydney’s original oldskool graffiti delegates who shaped the local scene and context today, alongside newschool up-and-coming crew the Insomniaks. From the old stable will be Kode2, Rexy, Kerupt, Mistery, Mare, Unique, Spice, Gane2 Phibs, Kade and Paze. Representing the new wave from the Insomniaks will be Jota, Daks, Joshuair, Opens, Oricks, Roter, Loks, Hules, Ouch, Ugly Greg, Yzer and Owel.

The highly successful Secret Wars, will be progressively intensifying over the course of the festival, with two artists battling head-to-head in a 90 minute freestyle creation each heat. Throughout the duration of the festivals run the battle royale will be staggered with heats being:

12 NOVEMBER, 6:00 – 7:30PM – Houl v Scale

19 NOVEMBER, 2:00 – 3:30PM – Mike Watt v Shannon Crees

26 NOVEMBER, 6:00 – 7:30PM – Deb v Teem

3 DECEMBER, 2:00 – 3:30PM – Ben Bigeni v Ken Taylor

Melbourne folk artist hero Ghostpatrol will translate his dreamy, fantasy universe into a bi-locational installation with Tristan Jallelah. The projects will replicate his stylistic world of wonder akin to a boy and the universe. Featuring kilometers of coloured wool, the project will be an exploration of the Moon Titan of Saturn and humanity’s place in relation.

In her signature, delicate, dark yet feminine style, Vexta will be tackling a sheer mass of corrugated iron on the Island with her fluid use of stencils and intricate hand painted detailing. Her work will be a personal extrapolation onto the medium complete with neon-drenched figures suspended in time and space.

Born from complementing styles, Phibs, Beastman and Numskull, three Sydney based heavyweights in the Street Art scene, are collaborating to fabricate an installation called Temple. The trio are creating a teepee in their whimsical dreamlike character and tribal leanings.

Also included will be the Oi You! Collection featuring the largest private collection of Banksy’s, amongst works by David Choe and Herakut. As well, live painting by Sao Paulo artist Ethos and Belgian monotone muralist Roa. Throughout the duration of the festival will be the Pro-AM tour Grand Final run by Skateboarding Australia. Inclusive will be an array of forums, family friendly activities and educational workshops and much more throughout the festivals tenure. Pick up a guide to see all the details.

The festival itself will run from the 4th of Nov to the 11th of Dec 2011, in a joint collaborative effort with aMBUSH Gallery and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
